“The Butterfly Effect”

The Butterfly Effect

Just finished watching this movie a few hours ago and I must say, I’m quite impressed. It was a LOT better than I thought it was going to be. I mean comon, Ashton Kutcher acting well in a serious drama? Who woulda ever guessed?

Anyway, The Butterfly Effect is about a boy who has backouts as a kid where he can’t remember the usually scary things that happened while he was out. Later, when he’s in college, he discovers that he can start to remember the periods when he had blackouts and actually travel back in time to change what went on then.

However, as chaos theory states (kinda), a small change can result in a much larger change which is the case here. Each time he attempts to fix something that went wrong in his past, his entire life and everyone in it is completely changed.

If you haven’t seen it, this is another movie that you should definetly see.

  1. I really enjoyed this movie. The question is which ending di you think was unstasifying? The one that they showed in theatres or the one people have told me is on the special edition version?

Anyway, I think the term “Butterfly Effect,” at least in the case of this movie is not in reference to Edward Lorenz’s Chaos theory of the same name, but has it’s origins in “A Sound of Thunder”, a short story by Ray Bradbury. There are some who believe Lorenz called it the Buttefly Effect because of Bradbury’s short story and anyone having read it will definitely see the reasons. I strongly suggest you read the short story rather than ask me to explain why … it’s short. Or you can wait to watch the butchery that Hollywood will release “based” on it. I suspect they kept enough of the original story to at least give the reason for the disaster.

  2. Pretty sure I watched the theatrical version. In the version I watched, he told his girlfriend that he didn’t like her anymore as a kid and at the very end, he passed her in the street with them barely missing each other. (God that part was sad, lol.)
