We, his family, have coordinated with OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University) to create a web page for people to make donations in Alex’s name. The donations will go to the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. This program provided Alex with the majority of his care. The medical staff there were truly compassionate, dedicated, and knowledgeable at every step of the way in his treatment. It would mean a lot to us if you would consider donating. Alex thought it would be a nice idea because of how supportive they were. Donating to this program will directly aid in cancer research and to care for and improve the lives of other people battling cancer.
Again, we can’t express how much everyone’s support has meant to Alex and our family. It is a comfort to see how much Alex is loved and appreciated. Thank you.

I only just learned of Alex’s illness and passing today. Clearly we haven’t been in contact over the past few years, but I am very sad he is gone. Alex impressed me as a role model with his combination of competence and willingness to be helpful to others (including me) in the WordPress world. He was such a very good guy.
To his close friends and family, I hope you continue to find comfort knowing Alex was so well respected and appreciated by a large global community of web developers and bloggers. We are missing him with you.
❤️
RIP Alex.
RIP Alex. Thank you for paving the way.
Rest In Peace Alex. Thanks for your contributions.

Today I was working on one of several WordPress sites I manage. I found myself writing a short article about Thumbnails, AKA Alternate Image Sizes. Several plugins that have proven very useful on the subject of Image Management were created by Alex, so I was adding references to them in the article. When reading about the plugin, I discovered that Alex had died from cancer. I went on to read more about him and found myself even sadder, because he and I share a lot in common outside of the computer world. We both like Top Gear and are probably both Petrol Heads (AKA Motor Heads), we program, work with computers, and much more that I garnered when reading his blog.
So even though he is no longer with us, what he did with his life continues to touch, influence, and make a positive difference in other people’s lives and the world. As a father, that would be no consolation to me if my child died. So for whatever it’s worth, I would say to them: I never met Alex. I didn’t know him when he was alive. I didn’t know who he was until early 2022. His work and effort has made a difference to me and made my life a bit better. I find myself very sad thinking about him, because it makes me think about my family. So maybe he’ll have even more of an influence on me, outside of the computer world, making me appreciate what I have in life. That’s a nice gift I’ve gotten from someone I didn’t know.
For all those involved, thank you for keeping his website active. It makes a difference.
And thank you for your work Alex. I’m a complete stranger who never met you, and I miss you.
