“Half-Life 2: Lost Coast” HDR Test Level Released

Valve, the makers of Half-Life 2, have released “Lost Coast”, a mini-level designed to showcase their new HDR (High-Dyanmic Range) system. If you own Half-Life 2, just restart Steam (if you have it open right now that is) and then right-click HL2:LC and install it. 🙂

Oh, and here’s HDR off vs. on:

(ignore the orange and white talk bubble thing – it’s used to activate commentary in the level)

It may not seem like much, but you really notice it in-game. When you’re in a dark area and then go outside, everything is really bright and over the matter of a few seconds, your virtual eyes adjust and all is good. Oh, and yes, I realize HDR is in Day of Defeat: Source meaning many of you have still seen it, but Lost Coast is still cool as it features commentary from the makers. 😀

Oh, and here’s another prettiness screenshot. 🙂

New Version of the Steam Client

Yep, that’s right, a completely new version of the Steam client was just released. Here’s a small screenshot to give you an idea.

New Steam Screenshot

Just restart Steam and the update will be applied automatically! 🙂

What’s new:

You’ll notice some changes in the way Steam looks since the last update. Right now we’re working on what we call Steam 3 — a collection of new features that covers everything from server robustness to support for third-party games. The first major piece we’ve updated is the organization of the games list and the Steam store. One of our primary goals with this change is to accommodate a larger and more varied collection of games. We hope everyone likes the newer look and feel of Steam.

The next area we’re going to be focusing on is the Friends system. As such, Friends will not be available until the overhauled version is released. We will keep you informed of its progress.

Steam, like our games, is something we’re always working to evolve. This is the first step in what should be a fun year or so for Steam and the community.

Yay! The friends system will finally work! lol

Battlefield 2 v1.03 Patch Out

A new patch for Battlefield 2 has been released. New things include a new version of the classic Wake map (Wake 2007) as well as lots of bug fixes. Of course since we’re talking about EA and DICE here, they’ve also introduced lots of new bugs.

The biggest new one is that if you use the new name prefix system (meant for allowing players to add a clan tag), you can’t set it to blank, you can only change it to something else. So, don’t use the new prefix system! [edit] Fixed it. If you type some text into the prefix box and then delete it out via backspace, it seems to go away. [/edit]

Anyway, you can go download it here: http://files.filefront.com/Battlefield_2_v103_Patch/;4213295;;/fileinfo.html

“Transporter 2”

Transporter 2 Poster

After seeing “The Transporter”, I wasn’t expecting much from “Transporter 2”. I mean sure, the first one was a kick to watch, but the plot was seriously lacking, to say the least. But hey, I don’t think anyone goes to these kinda movies expecting to see top notch acting and an excellent plot. These types of movies are designed to be full of action and keep you on the edge of your seat and this movie delivers.

Once again, mercenary/driver/martial arts expert/superhero/etc. Frank Martin (played by Jason Statham) is thrown into a highly unlikely scenario where he has to rescue some innocent person. This time around, a little boy, the son of a major anti-drug bureaucrat, that Frank has been hired to drive to and from school (no, he doesn’t drive a school bus) gets kidnapped. Frank of course promises to rescue him.

True to the previous Transporter film, “Transporter 2” features tons of beautiful women, fast cars, explosions, and exotic locations. However, the bullshit meter is off the charts this time as Frank does repeated impossible stunts. I won’t “spoil” them by saying what they are, but they are definitely way out there.

Overall, it was a good action flick and did exactly as promised — to provide lots of action. It didn’t try to be something it wasn’t and because of that, I’m giving it a thumbs up. You for sure won’t come out of the theater having seen a great movie, but you will be satisfied, assuming you didn’t go in expecting to see Oscar material that is. 😉

So basically, if you like action flicks, go see it, or even better, wait for it to come out on DVD and rent it, otherwise avoid it ’cause that’s all it has going for it really — action and babes.

“The Butterfly Effect”

The Butterfly Effect

Just finished watching this movie a few hours ago and I must say, I’m quite impressed. It was a LOT better than I thought it was going to be. I mean comon, Ashton Kutcher acting well in a serious drama? Who woulda ever guessed?

Anyway, The Butterfly Effect is about a boy who has backouts as a kid where he can’t remember the usually scary things that happened while he was out. Later, when he’s in college, he discovers that he can start to remember the periods when he had blackouts and actually travel back in time to change what went on then.

However, as chaos theory states (kinda), a small change can result in a much larger change which is the case here. Each time he attempts to fix something that went wrong in his past, his entire life and everyone in it is completely changed.

If you haven’t seen it, this is another movie that you should definetly see.

“Dark City”

Dark City

When I saw this sci-fi thriller a few nights ago, I had never even heard of it. However, after watching it, I’m sure glad that I took the time to.

Here’s a non-spoiling plot summary from IMDb since I’m too lazy to write my own:

John Murdoch awakens alone in a strange hotel to find that he has lost his memory and is wanted for a series of brutal and bizarre murders. While trying to piece together his past, he stumbles upon a fiendish underworld controlled by a group of beings known as The Strangers who possess the ability to put people to sleep and alter the city and its inhabitants. Now Murdoch must find a way to stop them before they take control of his mind and destroy him.

The plot is perhaps a tiny bit thin in places, but the idea of the movie and more importantly, the visual style of the movie, is awesome. It sorta reminds me of the Sin City style — very dark and artistic.

If you haven’t seen it (it’s old, it came out in 1998, so I imagine some of you have), you really should. Definetly worth your time, especially if you’re into sci-fi.

Live for Speed S2

So after playing Live for Speed S1 a lot with a bunch of guys from my forums, I bought Live for Speed S2. LFS is a kickass racing sim and while I usually stay away from sims ’cause I find arcade racing games more fun, I gotta admit, LFS is pretty damn fun.

Here’s a screenshot to give you an idea of the graphics: (click the image for more)

As for the physics, they are some of the best racing physics in any game I’ve ever played. No joke.

If you haven’t checked it out, I really suggest you do. You can get the demo right here.

Some Commentary & Funny Stuff on the GTA:SA ESRB Rating Change

First off, if you hadn’t heard, there is some game source code in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (for both the PC and PS2) that if unlocked allows you to see the main character having sex with a naked girl. Mind you though that it requires modifying the game code in order to be able to view it. Rockstar Games, the makers of the GTA series, removed the scenes from the game (but not the code for them) before the game was released and if you play the game as it came right outta the box, you’ll never see the contriversal scenes. Here’s a video though of one of the scenes if you’re interested in what they’re like, (it’s not work safe of course).

Because of this, the ESRB changed the game’s rating from Mature, (“suitable for persons ages 17 and older“), to Adults Only, (“persons 18 years and older“). As a result of this ratings change, Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, and Circuit City have all pulled the game from their shelves.

Before I get into how much bullshit it is changing the rating of a game due to content that can only be accessed by modifying game content, let me point out how rediculous the rating change is (from ages 17+ to 18+). Well, actually, even better, let me link to a hiliarious article by Maddox.

More recently, Senator Hillary Clinton asked the Federal Trade Commision (FTC) to investigate Rockstar Games saying that they had “gamed the ratings system” by concealing the sex scenes and she called for a $90-million study on the effects of video games on children.

Now to the real point of my blog post — in today’s Los Angeles Times, an excellent commentary appeared on the whole subject that is really worth the read if you have a minute or two.

I’ve also mirrored the article here if the above link becomes no longer available: Continue reading
